World Oceans Day Celebrations

The 8th of June is World Oceans Day. According to World Oceans Day organisers the oceans should be celebrated for many reasons.

The oceans:

  • Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
  • Helps feed us
  • Regulates our climate
  • Cleans the water we drink
  • Offers a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
  • Provides limitless inspiration!

And of course, they link us all!!

 

In celebration, NISC has made 3 of our most highly cited papers from African Journal of Marine Science's available free for the rest of June 2014.

The first paper by A. Mead et al (AJMS vol 35 (3) 2013) is entitled "Human-mediated drivers of change — impacts on coastal ecosystems and marine biota of South Africa".  This paper suggests that "A growing body of evidence indicates that local air and sea temperatures, wind patterns, ocean current speed and upwelling regimes are all being affected by human-mediated climate change"

 

The second paper covers the "Feeding habits and food partitioning between three commercial fish associated with artificial reefs in a tropical coastal environment" written by  C. Mablouké et al, (AJMS vol 35 (3) 2013)

Lastly, a paper by R. Daly and MJ Smale (AJMS Vol 35 (1) 2013) looked at a "the use of a novel underwater biopsy probe designed to collect muscle and dermal tissue samples from large (170–220 cm total length), free-swimming bull sharks". This paper is entitled "Evaluation of an underwater biopsy probe for collecting tissue samples from bull sharks Carcharhinus leucas"
